Travel and "Street Shooting"
I am comfortable walking around with my equipment in a photo backpack everywhere I have been. However, I have yet to be successful shooting street photography in Washington in the style of I have a couple of photos that come close, but for the most part I have failed to capture the candid, enigmatic style of the street journalists. And I admire this style very much. Perhaps I should shoot more black and white? No. More likely, I just need to be more comfortable brazenly walking up to people I do not know and snapping a photo in their faces. Needless to say, this is not something that can be done with a large camera or a tripod, and many street photographers use small, quiet, and mechanically wonderful Leica M3s or M6s or similar, fast normal-wide angle lenses, and fast B&W film for their unsuspecting subjects. In a foreign location, it should be easier to blend in as a tourist and snap away. Yet I still find myself reluctant to shoot random people. Maybe I will eventually grow into this style of photography.
