Canned Meat Products Did You Get A Spam E-mail?

Sorry if you did, but it wasn't from me. Unfortunately, this domain name is one of many on the Internet that routinely gets spoofed by spammers in Amsterdam and Bulgaria (and possibly other places, but those are the two that I see often in the headers). If the return address is random characters at briankennedy.net, then you can be sure it did not come from this site. Look at the full headers of the e-mail to discover where it really came from.

How To Check E-mail Headers

Most e-mail programs allow you to check the full header of a message to affirm its authenticity. What you are looking for is the chronologically first 'Received: from' entry in the header. Check to see that it is consistent or has some logical connection to the 'From:' address.

'Received: from' fields can be forged, but it is more difficult than forging the 'From:' address, which is very easy to fake. The idiot spammers that spoof this site and others generally do not change the 'Received: from' fields.

In Outlook Express 6:

  1. Right click on a message.
  2. Select 'Properties'.
  3. If you have already double clicked on a message, drop down the 'File' menu and select 'Properties'.
  4. Click on the 'Details' tab.
  5. You can click 'Message Source...' and maximize the resulting window be able to read the header better.

There is a very good tutorial on reading e-mail headers on stopspam.org.
