Black-crowned Night Heron

Another Black-crowned Night Heron at the National Zoo. This is a wild, not a captive bird. The Herons have mated and nested in the trees of the National Zoo for the past ten years or so. This is from last year's rookery. I like the light here -- almost a spotlight effect. That's a piece of feather in his bill. He was probably preening before I shot this.
