Black-crowned Night Heron

You can really tell that this Black-crowned Night Heron is breeding. When their hormones are active, their colors are especially brilliant -- the lore (fleshy part near the eye) on this bird is very blue, the eye and legs are very red. This is one of the wild birds that visited the National Zoo last year to nest.
