Old Jewish Cemetery

Prague's Old Jewish Cemetery originated in the 15th century at the outskirts of the Jewish Ghetto when development of the city made the Jews abolish their old burial locations outside the city walls. Jews were not allowed to bury their dead outside the Jewish Ghetto, and the site became very crowded. There are up to twelve layers of burial here. I was trying to show the density of the tombstones with this shot. The oldest of the 20,000 preserved tombstones is that of Abigador Kara, buried here in 1439. The cemetery was closed for burials in 1787.
