Herons in Whitewater

This shot of Great Blue Herons at the base of Great Falls of the Potomac in Virginia is my favorite wildlife shot in my files. I think it has a very "Oriental painting" feel to it.

I don't think it is typical to see these birds in whitewater, but they are becoming more common, and there are several pairs of Great Blue Herons who spend time fishing at Great Falls. They aren't always so easy to find, but they may come by if you stick around and wait. These birds surprised me one day when I went there to shoot landscapes. I was lucky to catch some poses for the camera.
