Great Egret with Fish

I have this same bird in another shot on this web page. This guy was very lucky to make such a good catch. Normally, these birds find much smaller fish in these waters. You can see the fish squirming here, but he didn't get away.

Another photographer and I were on the bank of this water at Chincoteague NWR where five or six of these Great Egrets were fishing. When this happened, I took a series of shots. The relatively low light meant that all but this one were hopelessly blurred by subject movement. One sharp frame was worth all of the blurred ones, though. This was probably the most exciting thing that had happened in about an hour of watching these guys. The other photographer happened to be changing rolls of film at the time. He missed the whole thing. This was very close -- this is full frame right to left, but slightly cropped from the top to 8x10 ratio.
