Heron with Fish

A Great Blue Heron catching a snack at Chincoteague NWR in Virginia. Herons stand quietly in the shallow water and watch for frogs or fish, then stab into the water and pluck out their prey. The ripples on the water are where this Heron plucked out this little fish. It doesn't look like much of a meal for such a big bird, but they eat these constantly, so I guess they add up. If you are lucky, you'll see a Heron or Egret catch a much larger fish in these waters. This is a slight crop from the original.
