St. Peter's Square

The Bernini-designed Piazza San Pietro, the most famous piazza in Rome. Well, not really Rome. The Vatican has been a sovereign state since February 1929. The obelisk in the center of the Square is one of a handful of obelisks scattered throughout Rome that originally came from ancient Egypt. The emperors of Imperial Rome apparently had a taste for exotic objects from the far reaches of the Empire. The Romans topped it with a cross after Christianity was legalized.

The building on the far right is the pope's apartment (his windows are the two on the top level on the right). The building with the peaked roof between the pope's apartment and St. Peter's is the Sistine Chapel.
