Rome and Stormy Skies The view of the Eternal City from the Dome of St. Peter's Basilica. The skies were pretty cloudy and it was raining off and on. Every now and then, though, the sun would break through the clouds and I could take a picture with a little more light, like this one. In the foreground is Michelangelo's Dome itself. The dark red circles along the dome are mounts for candles -- how the dome was lit in the days before halogen spotlights. Down further is the roof of the Basilica. There are a few people on the roof to the right. Those are tourists who went up to this spot and are at the halfway point to getting back down.
