Apse of St. Peter's

Bernini designed much of the interior decoration of St. Peter's Basilica, including this Baroque Cathedra in the center of the photo. The window is called the "dove window." In the center of it is a white dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, surrounded by orange and yellow rays.

The light from the window pours out onto a large bronze sculpture of clouds and angels. Just below the bronze sculpture and window is the "Throne of Peter," a massive oak throne that contains fragments once thought to be relics of the chair from which St. Peter delivered his first sermon.

The altar in front of the Cathedra is the one used for everyday services, including the services we attended while we were there. We were seated about five rows up from this spot, on the left, near the organ.
