Piazza Navona and Fontana del Moro

The Piazza Navona is in the very heart of Rome, and like many of Italy's large squares, today it hosts a lively night scene, with street performers, artists, and outdoor cafes. Piazza Navona is special, however, because it has been the social center of the Eternal City since the fourteenth century. This is due in no small part to its central location and extraordinary size. The reason it is so large is that it retains the shape of what is beneath it -- a first century stadium and chariot racetrack built by the Emperor Domitian.

The foreground fountain, the Fontana del Moro, is one of two Bernini-designed fountains in the square. In the center of the fountain is a large muscle-bound Moorish figure, giving the fountain its name. Bernini also designed the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi nearer the center of the square.
