Trevi Fountain As part of our night walk across Rome, we stopped by the Trevi Fountain, probably the most famous of all the fountains in Rome. Like many of the Roman monuments, it is huge, the largest fountain in Rome. The fountain sits atop the original terminal of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, which was built around 19 B.C. by Marcus Agrippa (who also built the original Pantheon), the son-in-law and right-hand man of Augustus Caesar. The fountain came some 1780 years later, designed by Nicola Salvi. The fountain is built into the building behind it, making for a theatrical backdrop. Roman folklore says that if you toss a coin over your shoulder into the fountain and make a wish, it will be granted and you will be assured a return trip to Rome. Of course we had to go through this ritual ourselves. Our return trip is not yet scheduled, but I am sure we'll be back.
