Church of San Domenico One of the sinuous streets of Siena leading to the Church of San Domenico. This overlook is near the Cloister of Casa di Santa Caterina, and I shot this on our walk back into the heart of Siena. It is difficult to tell scale in this shot, but San Domenico is a massive church. Its austere, barn-like exterior belies an ornate and elaborate interior. A gilded tabernacle inside houses the preserved head of Saint Catherine. Construction of the church began in 1226. Photo geek note: This image has some digital work; I straightened the vertical lines. My experience with a view camera has led me to particularly dislike converging vertical lines from wide-angle lenses. Occasionally, I'll accept it and even empasize it, like in this shot of Il Duomo in Florence. But for the most part, I try to avoid creating converging and diverging verticals when I can. In this shot, I could not avoid it, but I fixed it afterwards in Photoshop. LENS: 28-70 at ~35mm | FILM: Fuji Velvia | EXPOSURE: f/8 at 1/?" | DATE: 10/03 |
