Pantheon

This was the third stop on our night walk across Rome. We started at Campo de Fiori, then went to Piazza Navona, then here to the Pantheon, next to the Trevi Fountain, passing the Piazza Colonna on the way, then finally to the Spanish Steps and home to our hotel. My feet hurt the next day, though not as bad as two days later, when I walked at night from the Santa Maria in Trastevere back through the Vatican and then home (a trip almost twice as long).

The Pantheon is an impressive structure. It is all the more impressive when you realize it dates from around 25 B.C., though the building we see today is a reconstruction by the Emperor Hadrian in the early second century A.D. Hadrian paid homage to Marcus Agrippa, the original architect, in the inscription above the portico, which loosely translated, means "M.Agrippa done built this here big buildin'. Yee haw!"

Though this was only our third stop on our night walk across the city, we decided this would be a good place to take a break. We stopped for coffee and desert at the cafe on the left side of this photo.
