Piazza Navona The Piazza Navona, a huge city square unspoiled by Roman traffic. Since Rome was rebuilt in the fifteenth century, this piazza has been the social heart of the city. It is built atop an ancient chariot racetrack and stadium dating from the first century A.D., and it still retains the racetrack shape. From medieval times up to the nineteenth century, the city flooded the piazza every August by stopping up the fountain outlets. Citizens would wade through and paddle around in the water, a relief from the summer heat. There are two Bernini fountains in the piazza, and I've posted pictures of both here, the Fontana del Moro and the (more famous) Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi.
