Whitetail Deer One of the many Whitetail Deer at Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park. Big Meadows is one of the best places I have been to shoot deer. They seem fairly acclimated to people, so I had no trouble walking around with a big lens and a tripod. I have been to Big Meadows several times. The first time I went, I found the deer so plentiful and approachable that my 500mm lens was way too long for most of my shots. On this particular day, I was not quite as lucky, but still found several deer to photograph. I particularly like the backlighting in this shot, the result of the very early morning sun. These deer are completely out of the meadow within thirty minutes after sunrise, so while there are lots of deer, the window to shoot them is pretty small.
