Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere

Every city has its Greenwich Village. London has Soho, Paris the Left Bank. Here in Washington DC, we have Dupont Circle. Rome has Trastevere, just across (tras) the Tiber River (Tevere) from the city center. Walking around Trastevere felt like walking around Dupont Circle. Kids, bars, tattoos, piercings.

The church of Santa Maria in Trastevere is just to the left of this view. This was a rainy night in the piazza, and I took this picture mainly because I liked the way the light reflected off the cobblestones in the rain. You can see the mass of people huddling under umbrellas on the left side of the frame. There is a fountain just to the left, and that seemed like a good congregating spot for people, undeterred by the weather.
