Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi

The "Fountain of the Four Rivers" on the Piazza Navona, in the heart of Rome. This baroque fountain, dating from the seventeenth century and designed by Bernini, is an obelisk surrounded by four men symbolizing the four great rivers -- the Ganges, Danube, Nile, and della Plata (the della what?). The figure on the left side of this picture, with his back to the camera, represents the Nile. His head is shrouded by a cloak because the source of the river was unknown at that time.
