Belted Kingfisher

A male adult Belted Kingfisher at Chincoteague NWR in Virginia. Kingfishers are notoriously difficult to approach and they are the bane of many bird photographers. They perch in conspicuous spots where they can watch over the open water for fish, which they catch by plunge-diving head first into the water.

Although they perch prominently, they are very aware of people, and will take off if someone gets too close. I watched this guy for at least an hour and I had come tantalizing close several times, but finally got lucky to get a few shots of him on this perch. In this shot, I caught him in the middle of a territorial call.
